The pairing of Jefferson and Washington this year carries special significance for our county. Washington County was one of the first localities in America named for General Washington. Jefferson, who served in the Virginia House of Delegates in the fall of 1776, carried the legislation that broke Fincastle County into Montgomery, Washington, and Kentucky counties, in part because settlers on the western frontier needed more accessible places to conduct government business.

This conversation goes beyond an exchange between two historical figures. These skilled interpreters will debate, challenge each other, and invite audience participation, creating an atmosphere as if Jefferson and Washington had casually stopped in Abingdon for an evening with the local community.

The Town of Abingdon has asked the Historical Society's historical interpreters to help bring the colonial era to life throughout the festival. Our interpreters in period dress will be present in the historic downtown area, engaging visitors with stories, demonstrations, and living history encounters that connect Abingdon's founding to the broader story of American independence. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich heritage of Washington County firsthand.
